How to View JSON as a Tree
- Paste or drop your JSON. Paste it anywhere on the page, drop a
.jsonor.jsonlfile, or choose one. It opens as a tree right away; if it isn't valid, you'll see the line and column where it breaks. - Explore it. Open and close branches with a click or the arrow keys. Each collapsed branch shows how many items it holds and a preview of what's inside.
- Find what you need. Search keys and values to jump between matches, then click a row to see its path, like
data.orders[0].customer.email, and copy the path or the value. - Take it with you. Switch to Formatted or Minified to copy or download the JSON, or open it in the Excel converter to get a spreadsheet.
Everything happens locally in your browser. Nothing you paste or open here is sent to a server.
How to Format and Validate JSON
- Paste your JSON. It's checked as soon as you paste. Valid JSON opens straight away; invalid JSON shows the line and column of the first problem, and Show me where puts your cursor on it.
- Choose Formatted. The JSON is beautified with 2-space indentation, one key per line, so it's easy to read and review.
- Or choose Minified. All whitespace is removed to make the smallest version for an API request or config file.
- Copy or download it. Copy JSON puts the result on your clipboard, and Download .json saves it as a file.
What People Use It For
- Reading an API response. Paste a minified response and see its shape at a glance, instead of scrolling through one long line. More on why that matters: what a JSON viewer is for.
- Writing code against JSON. Click the value you need and copy its exact path for your JavaScript, Python, or Java code.
- Fixing broken JSON. Get the line and column of a syntax error, and jump straight to it.
- Checking a log or export. Open JSON Lines / NDJSON files and search every record at once.
Need that JSON in a spreadsheet?
The free converter flattens nested JSON into clean columns or rows, then downloads Excel or CSV, or copies it into Google Sheets.
JSON Viewer Questions
How do I check if my JSON is valid?
Paste it above. Valid JSON opens as a tree. If something is wrong, such as a missing comma, a trailing comma, or an unquoted key, you'll see the line and column where it breaks, and Show me where takes you to it.
What's the difference between formatting, beautifying, and pretty-printing JSON?
They mean the same thing: adding line breaks and indentation so JSON is easy to read. Minifying is the opposite, removing all extra whitespace to make it as small as possible. This tool does both.
Do I need to download a JSON viewer app?
No. This viewer runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, or Android, with nothing to install. Paste JSON or drop a .json file onto the page and it opens as a tree.
Is my JSON uploaded anywhere?
No. Viewing, searching, formatting, and validating all happen in your browser. Nothing you paste or open here is sent to a server.
How large a JSON file can I open?
Files up to 200 MB on a computer (50 MB on phones). Long lists open 200 items at a time so even large arrays stay fast, and search finds values anywhere in the file.
How do I get the path to a value in JSON?
Click any row in the tree. Its path appears above the tree in JavaScript notation, for example data.orders[0].customer.email, and Copy path puts it on your clipboard.
Can I open JSON Lines (NDJSON) files?
Yes. A file with one JSON record per line opens as a single list you can browse and search. Minify keeps it as one record per line.
Can I turn the JSON into a spreadsheet?
Yes. Open in the Excel converter takes the same JSON to the free converter, which flattens nested data into columns or rows and downloads Excel or CSV, or copies it into Google Sheets.
